What is COUNTBLANK function in Excel?

COUNTBLANK function is one of Statistical functions in Microsoft Excel used to count the number of empty cells in a range of cells.

Syntax of COUNTBLANK function

COUNTBLANK(range)

The COUNTBLANK function syntax has the following arguments:

  • Range    Required. The range from which you want to count the blank cells.

COUNTBLANK formula explanation

Cells with formulas that return “” (empty text) are also counted. Cells with zero values are not counted.

Example of COUNTBLANK function

Steps to follow:

1. Open a new Excel worksheet.

2. Copy data in the following table below and paste it in cell A1

Note: For formulas to show results, select them, press F2 key on your keyboard and then press Enter.

You can adjust the column widths to see all the data, if need be.
