What is BIN2DEC function in Excel?

BIN2DEC function is one of Engineering functions in Microsoft Excel that converts a binary number to decimal.

Syntax of BIN2DEC function

BIN2DEC(number)

The BIN2DEC function syntax has the following arguments:

  • Number: The binary number you want to convert. Number cannot contain more than 10 characters (10 bits). The most significant bit of number is the sign bit. The remaining 9 bits are magnitude bits. Negative numbers are represented using two’s-complement notation.

BIN2DEC formula explanation

If number is not a valid binary number, or if number contains more than 10 characters (10 bits), BIN2DEC returns the #NUM! error value.

Example of BIN2DEC function

Steps to follow:

1. Open a new Excel worksheet.

2. Copy data in the following table below and paste it in cell A1

Note: For formulas to show results, select them, press F2 key on your keyboard and then press Enter.

You can adjust the column widths to see all the data, if need be.

Formula Description Result
=BIN2DEC(1100100) Converts binary 1100100 to decimal 100
=BIN2DEC(1111111111) Converts binary 1111111111 to decimal -1
