What is UNICHAR function in Excel?

UNICHAR function on is one of TEXT functions in Microsoft Office Excel that returns the Unicode character that is referenced by the given numeric value.

Syntax of UNICHAR function

UNICHAR(number)

The UNICHAR function syntax has the following arguments.

  • Number    Required. Number is the Unicode number that represents the character.

UNICHAR formula explanation

  • The Unicode character that is returned can be a string of characters, for example in UTF-8 or UTF-16 codes.
  • If Unicode numbers are partial surrogates and data types that are not valid, UNICHAR returns the #N/A error value.
  • If numbers are numeric values that fall outside the allowable range, UNICHAR returns the #VALUE! error value.
  • If number is zero (0), UNICHAR returns the #VALUE! error value.

Example of UNICHAR function

Steps to follow:

1. Open a new Excel worksheet.

2. Copy data in the following table below and paste it in cell A1

Note: For formulas to show results, select them, press F2 key on your keyboard and then press Enter.

You can adjust the column widths to see all the data, if need be.

Formula Description Result
=UNICHAR(66) Returns the character represented by the unicode number 66 (uppercase B). B
=UNICHAR(32) Returns the character represented by the unicode number 32 (space character). Space character
=UNICHAR(0) The unicode number 0 returns the error value #VALUE! #VALUE!
