by

What is MROUND function in Excel?

MROUND function is one of the Math and Trig functions in Microsoft Excel that returns a number rounded to the desired multiple.

Syntax of MROUND function

MROUND(number, multiple)

The MROUND function syntax has the following arguments:

  • Number: The value to round.
  • Multiple: The multiple to which you want to round number.

MROUND formula explanation

  • MROUND rounds up, away from zero, if the remainder of dividing number by multiple is greater than or equal to half the value of multiple.
  • The Number and Multiple arguments must have the same sign. If not, a #NUM error is returned.

Example of MROUND function

Steps to follow:

1. Open a new Excel worksheet.

2. Copy data in the following table below and paste it in cell A1

Note: For formulas to show results, select them, press F2 key on your keyboard and then press Enter.

You can adjust the column widths to see all the data, if need be.

Formula Description Result
=MROUND(10, 3) Rounds 10 to the nearest multiple of 3. 9
=MROUND(-10, -3) Rounds -10 to the nearest multiple of -3. -9
=MROUND(1.3, 0.2) Rounds 1.3 to the nearest multiple of 0.2. 1.4
=MROUND(5, -2) Returns the #NUM! error message because -2 and 5 have different signs. #NUM!

Known Limitations

When a decimal value is provided to the Multiple argument , the rounding direction is undefined for midpoint numbers. For example MROUND(6.05,0.1) returns 6.0 while MROUND(7.05,0.1) returns 7.1.
